How to slice an avocado
- First, use a knife (chef’s knife ideally) to slice it in half lengthwise. You do this by inserting the knife until you feel the pit, then rotate the avocado around until it is cut into two halves.
- Rotate the two halves to separate the avocado, and pull apart. Then set the avocado half with the pit down on a cutting board, cut side up.
- Insert the blade of the knife into the pit, and twist to remove the pit from the flesh. Be careful with this step.
- From there, scoop the flesh of the avocado into a bowl and it is ready to go!
Best tip
Use ripe avocados. Under ripe avocados have a skin that is light green and feels firm. They will be too difficult to mash and taste bitter.
Ripe avocados have dark purple skin and feel soft. Overripe avocados have black skin, and feel mushy.
If you have avocados that need ripening, place them in a brown paper bag for a day or two with the bag closed. To speed up the process, add a banana to the bag.
